Introduction to CATIA Course

Computer-Aided Three-Dimensional Interactive Application, known by CATIA, is a multi-platform software that is best suited for computer-aided engineering (CAE), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), computer-aided design (CAD), Product Life-Cycle Management (PLM) and 3D modelling. The software is developed by the French company Dassault Systèmes.  AVIONS MARCEL DASSAULT, the French aircraft manufacturer, started CATIA as an in-house development during 1977, at that time customer of the CADAM software to develop Dassault’s Mirage fighter jet. Later on, aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding, and other industries adopted CATIA. CATIA was initially named in French as CATI (Conception Assistée Tridimensionnelle Interactive), it was renamed in 1981 when the company Dassault Systèmes created a subsidiary to develop and sell and signed a non-exclusive distribution agreement with IBM. In 1984, the Boeing Company chose CATIA V2 as its major 3D CAD tool, which became its largest customer. In 1988, it was ported from mainframe computers to the UNIX platform. In 1990, General Dynamics Electric Boat Corp chose CATIA as its main 3D CAD tool for the designing of the U.S. Navy’s Virginia class submarine. Also, Lockheed was selling its CADAM system worldwide through the channel of the company IBM since 1978. In 1992, CADAM was purchased from the company IBM, and the next year CATIA CADAM Version 4 was published. In 1996, including IBM AIX, Silicon Graphics IRIX, Sun Microsystems SunOS, and Hewlett-Packard HP-UX, it was ported from one to four UNIX operating systems. In 1998, the 5th version of CATIA was released and was an entirely rewritten version of CATIA with support for UNIX platform, Windows NT and Windows XP (since 2001). In the years prior to 2000, problems caused by incompatibility between versions of CATIA V4 & CATIA V5 led to $6.1B in additional costs due to several years of project delays in the production of the Airbus A380. In 2008, Dassault Systèmes released CATIA V6. While the server of CATIA is able to run on  Linux, AIX and Microsoft Windows, client support for any operating system other than Microsoft Windows was dropped by Dassault Systèmes. In 2010 November, the French company Dassault Systèmes launched CATIA V6R2011x, the new and latest release of its PLM 2.0 platform, while continuing to support and improve its CATIA V5 software for the bugs in order to bring the updates and modified version of CATIA. In June 2011, Dassault Systèmes launched V6 R2012. In 2012, Dassault Systèmes launched V6 2013x. In 2014, Dassault Systèmes launched 3DEXPERIENCE Platform R2014x and CATIA on the Cloud, a cloud version of the same software. In 2018, Dassault Systèmes launched 3DExperience Marketplaces to attach CATIA Users, with manufacturers, standard parts creators, and engineers. In 2019, 3DExperience Marketplaces launched an Add-in in CATIA, to attach directly manufacturers with designers.

Mechanical Designs:- Mechanical designs determine and display geometry, properties and dimensions of a component.  It is done with the help of;

  • Sketcher: – Sketcher is important feature available in CAD software that enables to sketch the component which later can be converted into 3D. Sketcher can be accessed from other applicable workbenches. Sketcher draws geometry on any surface that later uses to add, delete or guide the component part.
  • Part design: – Part design helps in the generation of 3D models and editing them.  Standard shapes are generated using available tools (like a sphere, cone, and cube) in 3D. Also, drawings from sketches are converted into 3D using features like extrude, sweep, revolve etc. Part designs guides the modelling of a component where a single final product can be imagined.
  • Assembly design: – In assembly modelling various mating parts are assembled according to their respective working positions. Assembly brings restriction in certain movements and allows certain movements a.k.a. restricting degrees of freedom. Assembly design workbench uses suitable parametric assembly constraints  For mating of parts. In Dassault Systems Catia, mating components can be modelled in Part design as well as in Assembly design, which is called bottom-up assembly approach and top-down assembly approach. Assembly is helpful in designing complicated parts in steps and individual components. It allows analysing of every single component, along with the final model. 
  • Drafting: – Drafting is a representation of a drawing of a component in front view, side view, top view and Isometric view. Drafting is useful in editing and analysing the dimensions. It can also be useful in generating a drawing. 
  • Sheet Metal Design and Production: – Dassault systems Catia use this workbench to design and generate the sheet metal components. Complex contours of sheet metal are possible to design. After generating design, validation checks are possible with the help of sheet metal production to check unnecessary bends and folds.
  • Surfacing:  Surfacing applies surface to the patterns and bounding faces.  Surfacing enhances the appearance of the final product. Surface models are no thickness models and have no mass properties. Wireframe construction elements are often used in surface generation. Surfacing plays important role in attractiveness and to present a unique shape to a component.
  • Weld  Design:-  Used for design and assemblies of welds.
  • Core and cavity design:- Design of mould.

Product Functional Tolerance and Annotation: – This workbench is useful to define characteristics of parts and products in 3D. Tolerance and annotations can be added to a component. Tools available in this workbench allow you to avoid having to create two-dimensional drawings. Tolerancing is an important method used to precisely describe your design dimensions. It allows to define the limits on dimensions and ensures that no part is getting rejected that will actually meet intended design. 


  • Product Structure:-  Represents product structure, geometry, shape, and size.
  • Material Library:- Assign material from the material library to a component and analyze properties.
  • Catalog Editor: – Dassault systems Catia is equipped with catalog components. Catalog editor helps in manage the catalog components.
  • Real-Time Rendering: – material specifications are defined over component.

Analysis & Simulation

Analysis and simulation are an integral part of product design testing. Any designed component model is expressed in a cad software that undergoes proposed mathematical calculations to obtain the outcomes and probabilities for any desired action. Simulation is helpful to check the working of a component considering its actual operating environment. Parameters that affect the components like bends, stress, and speed are noted and analyzed. It saves the faulty product from being manufactured.  Simulation forecasts the behavior of a product. Hence necessary changes can be done to design to influence that behavior without actually having to manufacture the part. Cad analysis workbench applies mesh to the component to divide the part into small elements and nodes. After meshing the desired parameters are set to start the simulation. Finer the mesh better will be the accuracy. Dassault systems Catia can perform
