Introduction to Creo Course

Creo is a sound foundation software that allows its user’s solid modeling, CAD, CAM and CAE along with the ability to expand deeper functionality with each component.  It is the direct modeling application of a suite of 10 that consists of apps, each delivering a distinct set of capabilities for a user role within product development. Tools provided are collaborative Solid models, assemblies, Orthographic and isometric views in 2D, finite element analysis, Nonuniform rational basis spline (NURBS) surface modeling, parametric modeling, direct drafting, and NC and tooling functionality for Production and mechanical designers.

Creo is also known as Creo Elements/Pro, or Creo Elements/Direct Modelling, formerly known together with Creo Parametric, as Pro/ENGINEER and Wildfire. The Creo suits replace and supersede Pro/ENGINEER (PRO-E), CoCreate, and ProductView which were earlier versions developed by PTC. Creo is developed by Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) which is a computer software and Services Company founded in 1985 located in Boston in Massachusetts. Creo began to developed in the year 2009 by PTC. Initially, they announced it using a code name Project Lightning at PlanetPTC.  PTC unveiled the product name for Project lightning to be Creo in October 2010. Afterward, Creo was released in June 2011. Creo is generated to support Windows OS. Specifically. Creo connects to the PTC’s other software that helps in product development with Windchill for Product lifecycle management (PLM), Mathcad for engineering calculations and Arbortext for enterprise publishing software. Hence Creo is a broader product development system PTC ever developed.

Creo apps are available in English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Japanese, Russian, Korean, and Traditional Chinese. 3D design:

3D design is generation of a product in a virtual developing environment in such way that the product has three dimensions (height, width, depth).  The result in forming a digital prototype of product, one you can explore and analyse in detail.   Without digital prototyping, physical prototypes would be needed to analyse that are more costly, time consuming to make and that might not be optimized.  3D design ensures easier and faster process, giving more time and energy to devote to optimize the product.

In general following are the 2 approaches used by designers for 3D modelling: 

  •  Direct modelling: – Direct modelling means you can push and pull directly on geometry.  Use it for speed and quick changes. 
  •  Parametric modelling: – Parametric modelling means that the software maintains consistent relationships between components, so a change to one component is a change to all.

Assembly modelling:

3D parts and assembly modelling is almost tangible representation of physical reality. It uses the  CAD technique through which the design intent of a part or assembly is precisely and ambivalently described in virtual model in 3D.Before computer-aided design software, highly trained mechanical drafters used a series of 2D drawings to show the whole of a part or complex product. It was a tedious, difficult and thankless task of trying to imagine and visualise how various flat images would come together as a whole object. Results came with errors in prototype stages and to overcome them was also very time consuming. Considering the difficulty inherent to this process, it’s easy to appreciate how product development could become more about managing unpleasant surprises and less about creating great products. With Creo, complex models can be generated precisely. Hundreds of parts can be assembled to finish a complex component and even in some cases like aircraft designs, thousands of components can be assembled. Surface modelling with Creo:

Creo has a good surface modeling capabilities. Boundary blend and Sweep commands helps in generation of surface models. Advance styles like (Interactive Surface Design Extension – ISDX) and Freestyle offers more capabilities to designer to create complicated models with ease. Surface modelling uses wireframes to assign small sections of the surface models. Surface modelling is not as sophisticated as solid modelling. A surface model is skin of an object that has no thickness. In surface modelling objects are defined by their bounding faces. Surface modelling does not have mass or volume and comprises of thin shells. It generally encloses hollow shapes. Despite comprises from thin shells, it supports mass and volume calculations, Finite element modelling, cross sectioning and interference detection.

Sheetmetal design:

Sheet metal design defines the geometry such that a sheet metal can be cut, bent, or punched to meet product requirements.  Sheet metal in design softwares are of utmost important in the view of reducing the scrap, controlling cost, enhancing ease of manufacture, and getting the best product to market faster. With Creo, we can easily and quickly create walls, punches, bends, flanges, notches, and more. Features like bend, flatten, cut, and pattern parts in a way that’s appropriate for manufacturing—all before creating a physical prototype. Formed and flattened sheet metal designs can be viewed simultaneously. Solid parts can be converted to sheet metals easily.

Additive manufacturing:

Additive manufacturing (3D printing) is the process of building an object layer by layer, placing one thin layer of material at a time. The process is not as simple as definition sounds. Designers often have to use multiple software packages, a situation which forces them to redesign, export, optimize and reimport their model each time.

Creo can share same file extension as 3D printers so whatever you model you can print easily. Creo can do both part preparation and lattice design and then print with ease with the help of following easy steps:

  • Create parametrically controlled lattice structures, fully-detailed parts with accurate mass properties. With variability control you can reinforce the lattices how you wish. (requires extension).
  • Define settings for multiple printers. 
  • Print parts, assign materials, colors, and calculate build and building material directly from Creo to supported 3D Printers.
  • Identify printability issues on your design. 
  • Scale, position, and show a clipped view of the model and probable support material on the tray. 
  • Connect directly to service bureaus, such as i.materialise, for access to 100+ materials.
  • Automatically optimize the position of the model in the tray for printing. 
  • Save the CAD data, model translation, and position in the tray as one STL file.

Analysis:

Creo Elements comes with multiple analysis tools that cover static, dynamic and fatigue finite element analysis, thermal etc.  Such tools help in analysing process parameters and reduce the errors. Relative motions are simulated by applying real life physical process parameters and results are obtained. Human factors, mould flow, manufacturing tolerance and design optimization are some tools. In conjunction with finite element analysis, design optimization can be done at graphics level.
