Disney Meets Social Robotics

Hey, this is Suraj. Today is the world of AI. The Disney company has just unveiled this robot! If you don’t believe it, take a look at this 90-second clip of a potential robotic companion for humans. At 1:06 in the video, pay special attention to the audience’s emotional reactions.

This cutting-edge prototype, created by Disney Imagineers, is specifically designed to establish emotional connections with people. Robotics is still in its early days, but progress is truly exciting.

At its first appearance at South by Southwest (SXSW), Disney Parks showcased the latest technology that visitors could one day experience at the theme parks, such as a rollerblading and somersaulting robot.

Disney Parks have a long history of innovation and have continually pushed the boundaries of what is possible in theme park entertainment. Here are a few examples of Disney Park innovation:

  • Audio-Animatronics: Disney Parks were the first to use Audio-Animatronics technology in their attractions. This technology combines animation and robotics to create lifelike characters that can move, speak, and interact with guests.
  • Epcot: Epcot, which opened in 1982 at Walt Disney World, was the first theme park to focus on education and innovation. The park features attractions and exhibits that showcase technology, culture, and the future.
  • Fast Pass: In 1999, Disney Parks introduced the Fast Pass system, which allows guests to reserve a time to ride an attraction without waiting in a long line. This system has since been upgraded to include Fast Pass+ at Walt Disney World, which allows guests to pre-book attractions and experiences before arriving at the park

During a presentation entitled “The Art & Science Behind Disney’s Timeless Storytelling,” Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, along with Walt Disney Imagineers, revealed a robot that resembled Judy Hopps from the Disney animated film “Zootopia.” As the robotic bunny with rollerblades emerged from a box and onto the stage, Imagineers Tony Dohi and Morgan Pope explained how Disney has been developing robots capable of forming “an emotional connection” with park guests. “Robotics is all about precision, repeatability, and inhuman perfection,” Pope explained in a video released by Disney Parks. Dohi and Pope, the same team behind the Spider-Man robot that performs at Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure, had the robotic bunny perform stunts on stage, such as skating across the stage and then falling down and like this stunt, and getting back up. by using high-performance materials also with the advantage of mechanical scaling effects she’s dynamic and tough and also uses motion capture data because wants to create performances with embedded emotion. The company has a long history of using robotics in its attractions, such as the Carousel of Progress and The Hall of Presidents at Disney World. Imagineers also showcased another “blue sky” character meet-and-greet concept, which involved an interactive Tinker Bell capable of engaging in real-time conversations with guests. The character was displayed inside a lantern and answered questions during the demonstration.

Other Disney technologies presented at SXSW included the giant Hulk exoskeleton walk-around character, which made its debut last year at Disney California Adventure, and the “real” lightsaber used at Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser.
