Possesiv Artikel in German

Hallo liebe Leute!! Whenever you are forming a sentence in German; you can’t skip possessive articles. Possessive articles indicate ownership/ belonging. In other words, they describe to whom something or someone belongs. These are words like my, your, his, their, etc.

Consider following examples-

Meine Mutter ist nett. – My Mother is kind.

Dein Handy ist teuer. – Your Phone is expensive.

Ihr Kuli ist kaputt. – Her pen is broken.

Just like definite, indefinite and negation articles; these articles (they are also called as possessive pronouns sometimes) also change to state the case the noun in front of them is using.

They are classified as:

mein – my

dein – your (singular)

sein – his

ihr – her

unser – our

euer – your (plural)

ihr – their

Ihr – your (formal)

How to use them in sentences :

First, you need to choose the appropriate possessive article from the table above, Eg- meindeinsein, etc. You need to know the gender of the noun you are showing the possession of, Eg- if you want to say ‘my Car‘ in German, you need to know that Auto is a neuter noun. These articles have to take the same endings as the indefinite article ein. And Possessive articles always precede a noun.
