The History Of Germany

Germany has a famous History and is still popular for its cultural quirks. The Germans are known to be analytical and practical people. Some may even consider them rigid and unimaginative. However, a bit of the History of Germany and the achievements of people here is enough to prove this conclusion false. Germany is known for its Music and philosophy. It boasts many famous musicians like Ludwig van Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, and Johann Sebastian Bach. The names like Richard Strauss, Carl Maria von Weber, and Richard Wagner are prominently known in the field of Opera. If not music, Germany is famous for its beautiful Castles. It is home to more than 2000 Castles, where most of which are more than 100 years old and have been converted into government buildings, hotels, museums, etc.

While these are historical facts, Germany is quite unique even today. This may be brought about by the fact it is quite cosmopolitan. It is home to over 80 Million people and has a wide palette of a diverse array of religions, customs, and traditions. While Germany was a pagan country(and the Norse Gods that are

known today like Thor, Loki, etc. were worshiped here), before the emergence of Christianity, it later became an important seat of the Holy Roman Empire. Indeed the customs of Christmas Trees and gift-bearing Santa Claus started in Germany along with the symbol of the Holy Trinity. Germany is also the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation. And now, since 75% of the German population is urban, symbols of the Stars and Moon of Islam are also seen and now the Catholics, Christians, and Islam coexist happily. Even German cuisine originally famous for different kinds of bread (3000 types), varying preparations of sausages and beer(considered as FOOD in Bavaria) is now influenced by Turkish restaurants and delis. Even the German language, influenced by such aspects, has 35 accents depending on the Geographical location. However, despite these differences, Germans are quite modern and advanced in many ways. They have the most progressive policies regarding immigration, gender equality, etc. Their commitment to the protection of the environment and the use of renewable energy is well-known. It is quite common in Germany to have separate color-coded dustbins for paper, plastic, non-recyclable plastic, and wet waste in houses.

Even the Work-life balance in Germany, unlike the traditional approach of working the whole day, is quite lax. The average working week in Germany is one of the lowest in Europe – just 35-40 hours a week. Germany was also the first country to start the concept of Daylight saving time which is now adopted in many European countries. This means, on a decided day, during warmer months, the Clocks are advanced so that darkness falls at a later clock time. The clocks are reset after six months during the colder months and the cycle continues. This Daylight saving time is beneficial as Germany has relatively warm summers and cold Winters with snowfall. It is rare to see a late sunset during these days. Also, there is no fixed rainy season in Germany. It rains all year round, though heavy rains are observed during summer.

Incidentally, this weather makes Germany a year-round tourist destination. It is quite easy to get a short 90-day Visa for tourists here. The Neuschwanstein Castle, the ultimate Fairy-Tale Castle is one of the most visited places in Germany. It is a unique example of Romanesque Architecture, lying on top of a 19th-century rocky hill visited by not only history buffs but almost every tourist for its beauty. Well-known carnivals and fests like Oktoberfest can also be classified as popular tourist destinations. Some places like Marienplatz are truly memorable in Winter. These places among other things are known for their Christmas Markets.

These places are Christmas-themed decorated Wonderlands set up on town squares with stalls of traditional drinks and food such as Glühwein, Gingerbread, Bratwurst, etc. When not visiting Fests or Karnevals, there are other historical monuments like Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. It is a beautiful building built to celebrate the loss of France to Prussia, or the Cologne Cathedral which is as huge as it is breathtaking.

If not for Churches, castles, and Museums, Germany is also famous for its scenic beauty. It boasts beautiful flower lakes and Waterfalls. Waterfalls like Sommerhalder Waterfalls, where the most popular and beautiful waterfall stands at a height of 64 meters. Since more than ⅓ of Germany is covered with Forests, Forests have also ended up being famous Tourist places here.
