How to Create Floor Plans in AutoCAD

Creating a floor plan in AutoCAD is an important skill for architects, civil engineers, interior designers, and students. AutoCAD allows you to prepare accurate and detailed 2D drawings that represent the layout of a building, including walls, doors, windows, furniture, and dimensions.


1. Set Up the Drawing

Start by opening a new AutoCAD drawing. Set the required units using the UNITS command. Choose the appropriate measurement system, such as millimeters, centimeters, or feet. Set the drawing limits and create separate layers for walls, doors, windows, dimensions, furniture, text, and other elements.


2. Draw the Walls

Use commands such as LINE, POLYLINE, RECTANGLE, and OFFSET to create the basic wall layout. Draw the outer walls first and then create internal partitions. The OFFSET command is particularly useful for maintaining a uniform wall thickness. Use TRIM and EXTEND to clean and connect wall lines accurately.

5. Add Dimensions and Text

Use the DIM or DIMLINEAR commands to show room sizes, wall lengths, door widths, and other important measurements. Add room names using the TEXT or MTEXT command. Proper dimensions and labels make the floor plan easier to understand and construct.


6. Hatch and Finalize the Plan

Use the HATCH command to represent wall sections, flooring, tiles, or other materials. Check the drawing carefully for gaps, overlapping lines, incorrect dimensions, and alignment issues. Finally, prepare the layout for printing or PDF export by setting the required scale, paper size, title block, and plot settings.


Start with Drawing Settings

Door swings are normally represented using arcs. Windows should be positioned to provide adequate natural light and ventilation. Frequently used doors and windows can be converted into blocks and inserted wherever required.


Add Furniture and Fixtures

Furniture helps communicate how each room will function. Add beds, sofas, dining tables, wardrobes, kitchen platforms, study tables, washbasins, toilets, and other fixtures. Blocks can save considerable drafting time because the same symbol can be reused throughout the drawing.


Include Dimensions and Annotations

A professional floor plan must contain clear measurements. Use dimension commands to indicate room sizes, wall lengths, openings, and overall building dimensions. Add room names using TEXT or MTEXT. Maintain consistent text height, dimension style, and annotation placement throughout the drawing.

Apply Hatching and Final Details

The HATCH command can be used to differentiate walls, floor finishes, tiles, or other materials. Add center lines, section marks, north direction, levels, and other required symbols where applicable. Before plotting, inspect the complete drawing for unwanted lines, gaps, overlapping objects, incorrect dimensions, and layer errors.




Prepare the Drawing for Printing


Finally, move to the Layout or Paper Space environment and create a suitable viewport. Select the required paper size and drawing scale. Add a title block containing the project name, drawing title, scale, date, and other necessary information. Use the PLOT command to print the drawing or export it as a PDF.



Understand the Project Requirements

Before starting the drawing, study the available dimensions and requirements. Identify the total plot or building area, number of rooms, required facilities, entrance location, staircase position, and circulation areas. Understanding these requirements before drafting helps prevent major changes later.


Establish the Building Boundary

Start by drawing the overall building or plot boundary. The LINE, PLINE, or RECTANGLE commands can be used depending on the shape of the project. Enter exact distances using the command line to maintain accuracy. Avoid drawing approximately with the mouse when preparing construction drawings.




Create External and Internal Walls

After establishing the basic boundary, develop the wall system. The OFFSET command is useful for creating wall thickness at a consistent distance. External walls can be drawn first, followed by internal partitions. Use TRIM to remove unwanted portions and EXTEND to connect lines correctly.


For larger projects, separate layers can be created for different wall types. This makes the drawing easier to control and edit.



Plan Room Sizes and Circulation

Room arrangement should be practical as well as visually balanced. Consider movement between rooms, furniture requirements, door positions, ventilation, and accessibility. Corridors and passages should provide sufficient space for comfortable movement. Kitchens and bathrooms should be planned with suitable working and circulation areas.


Draw Openings

Doors and windows should be added after the wall arrangement is completed. Door openings should be positioned according to the functional requirements of each room. Show the opening direction with an arc where required. Windows should be placed on appropriate walls to support ventilation and natural lighting.


Creating reusable blocks for common doors and windows can significantly improve drafting speed.


Add Staircases

If the building contains multiple levels, draw the staircase carefully. Show the steps, direction of movement, landing, and opening through the slab where applicable. Use consistent dimensions and symbols so that the staircase can be easily understood from the plan.

Add Furniture and Fixtures

Furniture symbols help demonstrate the usability of each space. Bedrooms may contain beds and wardrobes, living rooms can include sofas and tables, while kitchens can include counters and appliances. Bathrooms can show toilets, washbasins, showers, and other fixtures.



Furniture should be placed without blocking doors, windows, or circulation paths.

Use Dimensions and Annotations


Dimensions are essential for communicating the exact size of the design. Add overall dimensions as well as individual room dimensions. Door and window sizes can also be identified where required. Use DIMSTYLE to maintain a consistent appearance.

Room names, notes, levels, and other information can be added using TEXT or MTEXT.

Finally, prepare the drawing in Paper Space, select the required sheet size and scale, add a title block, and use the PLOT command to print or create a PDF.
