PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT

“The ultimate goal of all personal development topics is self-realization or self-actualization.”

When we talk about Personality….what do we actually mean by this word?

Personality is what makes a person a unique person.

When a child is born, we recognize that there are a set of genetically determined traits which guides the child to approach and learn about the world.

The environment plays a major role in developing the personality of a child or in other words-‘nurturing’ the child.

High quality parenting also plays an important role in the child’s personality development.

We also have to acknowledge that ‘character’ determines how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. The character of a person evolves throughout life though much depends on inborn traits and the experiences in early life. A person’s moral development also depicts the person’s character.

Every individual has his own characteristic way of behaving, responding to emotions, perceiving things and looking at the world. No two individuals are similar.

What an individual observes in his/her childhood days and growing days form his/her personality. The upbringing of a person plays an important role in shaping his/her personality.

Personality is nothing but the collection of memories and incidents in an individual’s entire life span. Environmental factors, family background, financial conditions, genetic factors, situations and circumstances all contribute to an individual’s personality.

How we behave in our day to day lives reflects our personality. How an individual behaves depends on his family background, upbringing, and social status and so on. If we remember, in our childhood days, we were always scared of venturing out at night or in the dark. It was because we were told that if we step out we will be caught by an unknown entity or some stranger with a big sack on his shoulder and taken away. This build up the fear in us, of going out alone or at night even when we grew up.

A person who was never allowed to go out or have friends will never mix up or share anything with others and will shy away from doing so. He/she will start believing that their home is the safest place and likewise, a person who never faced any problems in his/her childhood will be an extrovert and enjoy socializing with others. Such a mindset soon becomes their personality.

Personality is how we interact with others. It is the total characteristics of an individual which makes him different from the others. Our personality makes us unique and helps us stand apart from the crowd.

Personality development is defined as a process of developing and enhancing one’s personality. Personality development helps an individual to gain confidence and high self esteem.

Importance of  Personality development : It also has a positive impact on one’s communication skills and the way one sees the world. Individuals tend to develop a positive attitude as a result of personality development.

A person develops a positive attitude in life, compared to a person who has a negative attitude who will always criticize everything around him/her and lose their cool.

It is necessary to behave in a proper manner when we are around people which will earn us respect. Being rude will never demand respect. Personality development develops our outer and inner self. We are social animals and we need to have a magnetic field around us to attract people, a charisma of our own. We gain recognition and are accepted by the society and people around us because of personality development.

Our personal as well as professional life depends on our personality development as it makes us disciplined, punctual and respectful. Our personal grudges and attitude is not a thing to be taken to the workplace. We have to maintain a balance between our work and personal life to have a peaceful and stress free life.
